I think bears are one of the first animals I knew, even though I grew up on a farm with sheep and horses in the Netherlands. Bears are in a lot of children’s stories. The bears from Goldielocks, Winnie the Pooh and Paddington. So many bears! And they are always lovely and fluffy.
And then you grow up and quickly learn: brown lay down, black fight back white good night. Bears are not human friendly at all. But I’ll stick to the stories of my childhood. So I drew this bear character strong and fluffy. A character that is soft, but can protect you when needed. I think we can all use a character like this in life. Even if you are a character like this. Everybody needs protection at some point. Whether that is physical protection or maybe mental protection against themselves or the world they live in.

The original is drawn with graphite pencil on 250 gms paper. This is extra thick paper (it’s actually used for watercolour). This paper has a little structure in it to give it a natural look.
